Water Feature FAQ

  • Start by considering what you want: the sound of flowing water, a view, a place for wildlife, or a quiet space to unwind. Also factor in space, slope, soil, and sun exposure. A pondless waterfall works great where you love sound but want minimal maintenance; fountains are ideal when space is limited or you want something decorative; a full pond gives you habitat potential and visual depth. Natural Elements by Design helps you choose the fit that balances beauty and ecosystem health.

  • Clean water comes from balance. Key tools are:

    • Mechanical filtration to catch debris

    • Biological filtration using beneficial bacteria to break down waste

    • Aeration to keep oxygen in the water so things don’t stagnate
We avoid harsh chemicals whenever possible, preferring natural methods—plants, proper circulation, and beneficial bacteria—that help nature do its work.

  • Algae feed on excess nutrients (from leaves, overfeeding fish, or runoff), sunlight, and stagnant water. To reduce blooms:

    • Limit direct sun over the feature

    • Maintain solid filtration and aeration

    • Remove debris (fallen leaves, dead plants) regularly

    • Use native aquatic plants that compete for nutrients
If algae become a problem, a good cleanout plus plantings and stronger filtration usually reset the balance.

  • That depends on your climate, the size of the feature, the amount of debris, and whether it has fish. Generally:

    • Light maintenance and skimming weekly to biweekly in warmer months

    • Full cleanouts annually (or more if needed)

    • Pump checks whenever you see reduced flow or noise
We design features to make maintenance accessible and as low-labor as possible, but every system needs some care to stay healthy.

  • Rhode Island winters can be harsh. For many features:

    • You’ll want to winterize pumps and equipment if freezing is expected

    • Features that can withstand cold (with proper design) may run parts of the system year‑round, but doing so safely matters

    • Use cold‑tolerant plants, avoid exposed water surfaces where ice could damage structure

Natural Elements by Design builds features that consider seasonal changes and year-round operation, so many components are protected or removable during winter.

  • Yes, if your pond is deep enough, oxygenated, and filtered properly. The number of fish depends on water volume, plant cover, filtration, and how stable the system is. Overcrowding stresses fish and leads to poor water quality. If you want fish, we design to support them—enough depth, space, clean water, and edging that allows fish to shelter and avoid predators.

  • Leaks and pump issues are common, but often repairable without full rebuilds. First step is an onsite assessment: check pump function, plumbing, liner integrity, and water flow paths. Nature‑based design helps: using quality liners, protecting plumbing, and placing components for easy access. If damage is beyond repair, we’ll help you understand options—repair, redesign, or rebuild—with long‑term ecosystem health in mind.

  • Standing water without movement is attractive to mosquitoes. To prevent this:

    • Keep water moving via pump or aeration

    • Remove resting places for insects (decaying plants, excess organic debris)

    • Use biological controls (mosquito dunks, certain fish) when needed
A well‑designed, well‑circulated system minimizes insect issues while supporting a healthy balance for wildlife.

  • Cost depends on size, materials, complexity, site access, slope, filtration, plants, and whether fish are part of the plan. Features can range from a few thousand dollars for a small fountain to tens of thousands for large ponds with waterfalls. At Natural Elements by Design, we provide pricing guides and custom estimates, so you can understand what you’re investing in and what you’ll get—for aesthetics, functionality, and ecosystem health.

  • Location matters a lot both for function and beauty:

    • Choose a site where runoff doesn’t naturally collect (you won’t want runoff entering you pond)

    • Avoid areas under too many trees (leaves = extra debris)

    • Ensure access to power and water is nearby

    • Consider visibility so you can enjoy it from your key vantage points (indoors and outdoors). Closer to the home is better.

    • Respect slope, soil type, and drainage patterns

We design your feature to work with the land, directing water naturally and using the flow, slope, and sun to your advantage rather than fighting them.
